Summer is a great time to be more active, get outside, enjoy the weather, and make new memories. A little extra Vitamin D and relaxation will do anyone good! At Vineyard Senior Living, residents have endless options to enjoy their summer with a full calendar of onsite activities and transportation to experiences outside the community.

1. Watch the Sunrise and Sunset

There’s nothing quite like a summer sunrise or sunset. Starting or ending your day with the sun is a great time to meditate, relax, and reflect on the day. It is also an excellent opportunity to get fresh air and enjoy the summer weather.

But did you know that watching the sunrise and sunset may have significant health benefits, too? Beyond allowing you a moment to decompress, research shows that it encourages an on-schedule circadian rhythm. This ultimately helps you either prepare to start your day with energy or helps you relax before drifting off to sleep.

2. Grow a Garden

Gardening is a fun summer activity that allows you to get outside, exercise, and create something beautiful (and even edible). Whether you are a dedicated gardener with a plot in a gardening club or simply want to try a couple of potted plants in your apartment, options are available for you.

Working in a garden does not have to be a strenuous activity that involves lifting sod and getting down on the ground. Elevated or small herb gardens work well indoors and create the perfect hobby to keep you busy over the sunny months.

3. Go for a Walk Outside

The weather doesn’t always allow for walking outside year-round, so take advantage of the temperature walking outside. Walking is one of the best physical activities you can do as an older adult. The benefits of staying active include, but are certainly not limited to:

  • Bone and muscle strength
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Improved mood
  • Healthier joints
  • Reduced instances of anxiety and depression
  • Improved stamina

But walks in the summer don’t just have to be for physical exercise—they can be fun. Try walking with a music playlist or listening to your favorite podcast. You might even consider joining a walking group and spending quality time with friends while you get your steps in.

4. Relax in the Water

Water sports and activities are beloved summer activities by swimmers and splashers of all ages. There are just a few months during the year when the water is warm enough outdoors to truly enjoy it. Even light swimming is a great way to stay active and one of the most gentle forms of exercise.

But if you aren’t a fan of swimming, you can still enjoy the water. Take a trip to your nearest lake and spend a day on the shore. If you don’t live near a body of water, you can even find your nearest pool and dip your feet for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

5. Have a Picnic or Cookout

During the winter months, you may spend a lot of your time eating and cooking inside. June, July, and August are the perfect time to get outside and enjoy a meal with friends at a picnic or cookout. Cookouts are a great way to connect with friends, family, and the community. Many parks offer public grills and places in the shade to enjoy a meal. If you’re not ready to plan a big get-together, consider enjoying a simple meal outdoors in the Vineyard Senior Living community. Just a little time in the fresh air can give you the boost you need to feel better.

6. Explore Farmers’ Markets or Festivals

There is usually an uptick in outdoor activities and events during the summer months, including farmers’ markets and festivals. You can find some of the best locally grown food and enjoy live entertainment.

Farmers’ markets are one of the easiest ways to support local farmers and entrepreneurs in the community and maybe even make new friends. To find out what’s going on in your community, look at the paper or contact your local chamber of commerce or community activity center. Our staff at Vineyard Senior Living will also help you find new activities, inside or outside the community, that you want to try out this season.
