Celebration of Life Day occurs each year on January 22 and is an excellent opportunity to come together and celebrate the children and grandchildren that bring joy to our lives. Though this holiday may not be a staple in your home, we’d recommend adding it to your calendar—retirees can pause to connect with those they love and spend quality time together.

But how do you celebrate this day? Well, our staff at Vineyard Senior Living has a few ideas:

Start a New Tradition

Traditions are one of the best ways to bring together generations. Traditions can be passed down from retirees to their kids to their grandkids and can become a meaningful part of the family legacy.

For starters, think about a new practice that you can start this year. It can be as simple as participating in a shared activity or visiting your favorite restaurant. Being intentional about new traditions and including kids and grandkids is a great way to honor the Celebration of Life Day.

Tell Stories

An excellent activity for this holiday is to share memorable stories highlighting how special kids and grandkids are. Many children don’t spend time looking through old family photos and appreciating their unique heritage. Celebration of Life Day is an excellent day to set aside time to do this.

Grab the scrapbooks, old VHS recordings, and photo albums, and relive these precious memories together. If your memories only exist in physical form, you can take this day to digitize videos and photos together.

Treat Kids to Their Favorite Things

If your kids or grandkids have a favorite activity, place, or food, Celebration of Life Day is the perfect day to treat them to their favorites. The day is about celebrating them, and there’s no better way to do that than by spoiling them a little bit. That’s what grandparents do best, right? Expressing interest in their favorite things can show appreciation and honor the holiday tradition.

Try a New Experience Together

There’s no better way to bond with younger generations than by trying a new experience together—something unique to everyone that creates a new shared memory. Take the day to try a recent activity, visit a nearby town or landmark, or even plan a staycation. A new adventure provides opportunities to bond and makes memories that will last a lifetime.

And a new experience doesn’t have to be an extravagant excursion or trip; it can be as simple as seeing a new movie, trying a new restaurant, or playing a new game. You can also take the day to learn something new together by attending a class or a museum.

Practice Gratitude

Being grateful is one of the essential skills learned by people of all ages. On this Celebration of Life Day, practice gratitude with your kids and grandkids. You can make a gratitude jar, tell them why you are grateful for them or write a gratitude list together.
